Great news to start! The stock market hit BRAND NEW RECORD HIGHS this week! The S&P 500 closed above 7,700 for the FIRST TIME EVER! 🎉 It was the SECOND week in a row of gains, and chip stocks came roaring back.

The funny part? It happened after a WEAK jobs report. (We'll explain that magic trick below!) Today in Stock 101, we're learning about stock splits. Then in Econ 101, we'll follow your tax money to see where it goes! And in Lemonade Picks, we're meeting Palantir, a mysterious company named after a magical crystal ball. Let's go! 🍋

This was a GREAT week for the market! Let's dig into the numbers.

🏆 New Record Highs!

The big story: STOCKS HIT RECORDS! The S&P 500 closed above 7,700 for the first time in history, reaching 7,757.64 by Friday. The Dow ended near 54,000, and the NASDAQ jumped to 26,690.

All three major indexes rose for the SECOND straight week! The S&P 500 gained about 3.6%, the NASDAQ soared about 5% (its best week since spring!), and the Dow rose about 3%.

💻 Chips Came ROARING Back

Remember the scary chip crash a few weeks ago? Semiconductor stocks BOUNCED BACK big time, with the chip sector jumping more than 7% for the week! This helped the tech-heavy NASDAQ lead the gains.

💼 The Weird Part: A WEAK Jobs Report Helped!

Here's the funny twist. On Friday, the July jobs report came out WEAK. The economy actually LOST about 23,000 jobs, the first monthly drop since February! Economists had expected a GAIN of about 80,000. Oops!

But stocks went UP on bad news? Yes! Here's the logic (we learned this back in Vol. 24!): weak jobs means a cooling economy, which means less pressure for the Fed to RAISE rates, which makes investors happy! Traders had worried the Fed might raise rates, and this weak report made that much less likely. So the market cheered! (The unemployment rate even ticked DOWN to 4.1%.) Two record-setting weeks in a row! 🎊

Imagine you have a delicious pizza cut into 4 big slices. Then your friend says, "Can you cut it into 8 slices instead?" So you cut each slice in half.

Now you have 8 slices instead of 4. But do you have MORE pizza? 🍕 Nope! It's the SAME pizza, just cut into more pieces! Each slice is smaller, but all together they still equal one whole pizza.

That's EXACTLY what a stock split is!

A stock split is when a company divides its existing shares into MORE shares. The most common type is a "2-for-1 split."

Let's say a company's stock costs $100 per share. In a 2-for-1 split, your 1 share becomes 2 shares, but each is now worth $50. And 2 shares times $50 equals $100, the SAME total value! If you owned 1 share worth $100 before, you now own 2 shares worth $50 each. You STILL have $100 total. Just like the pizza! 🍕

If splitting doesn't change the value, why do companies do it? A few reasons:

1. Lower price = easier to buy! 🛒 If one share costs $1,000, that's a lot for a regular person. After a split into smaller pieces (say $100 each), MORE people can afford to buy.

2. It feels more affordable 😊 Even though the value is the same, a $50 stock FEELS cheaper than a $500 one. This can attract more buyers.

3. More shares to trade around 🔄 More shares floating around can make it easier to buy and sell.

Lots of famous companies have split their stock: Apple has split FIVE times, NVIDIA did a big 10-for-1 split, and Amazon did a 20-for-1 split in 2022 (one $2,000 share became 20 shares of $100!).

There's also a backwards version called a reverse stock split, where a company COMBINES shares to make the price HIGHER (10 shares worth $1 become 1 share worth $10). Companies usually do this when a price has dropped very low. It's often a warning sign that a company has been struggling. 😟

Here's what SMART investors know. A stock split does NOT make a company more valuable! The pizza is the same size, just cut differently.

So if you hear "Company X is splitting its stock!" and think "I should buy because it's cheaper!", remember: the VALUE didn't change at all. What REALLY matters is whether the company is a GOOD business (remember free cash flow from last week?). The number of slices doesn't matter. The quality of the pizza does! 🍕

Have you ever bought a toy for $10, but at the register it cost $10.70? That extra 70 cents was a tax! Taxes are everywhere, and today we're going to follow the money to see where it goes!

Taxes are money that people and businesses pay to the government. Almost everyone pays them! When you grow up and get a job, part of your paycheck will go to taxes.

Think of it like this: everyone in a community chips in a little money, and the government uses that pool to pay for things EVERYONE shares and needs.

There are several kinds. Income tax is a portion of the money people earn from working (the more you earn, the more you usually pay). Sales tax is a little extra added when you buy things (like that 70 cents!). And property tax is what people who own homes or land pay every year, which often funds local schools!

Here's the fun part! Your tax money pays for TONS of things you use every day:

Taxes go to THREE levels of government: Federal (the whole country) pays for the military and national programs, State(like California or Texas) handles highways and state colleges, and Local (your city or town) covers schools, trash pickup, and local parks. So your tax money gets split up to help at every level!

Here's something grown-ups argue about ALL the time: How MUCH should taxes be? Some people think taxes should be HIGHER, so the government can help more people. Others think taxes should be LOWER, so people keep more of their own money. There's no single "right" answer! It's one of the biggest debates in politics, and smart people disagree about it.

And a cool connection to last week: a tariff is a special tax on goods coming IN from other countries. So when countries argue about tariffs, they're really arguing about a type of TAX! Everything connects. 🌐

This week's pick is one of the most FASCINATING and mysterious companies around. Meet Palantir!

First, the COOLEST fact. Palantir is named after a magical object from The Lord of the Rings! In the story, a "palantír" is a crystal ball that lets you see faraway places and events. 🔮

That's a PERFECT name, because Palantir the company makes software that helps organizations "see" and understand HUGE amounts of information all at once!

Palantir builds software that helps big organizations make sense of MASSIVE piles of data. Imagine you had a MILLION puzzle pieces scattered everywhere. Palantir's software is like a super-smart helper that puts the puzzle together and shows you the important picture!

Their software helps make delivery routes faster, hospitals run better, governments stay safe, and factories make fewer mistakes. They have platforms with cool names: Gotham (for governments), Foundry (for businesses), and AIP (their AI platform).

Palantir was founded way back in 2003 by a group including a famous investor named Peter Thiel (who also helped start PayPal!). At first, Palantir mostly helped the U.S. government with security and safety. For years, it was a quiet, secretive company most people had never heard of. But over time, it started helping regular BUSINESSES too. And when the AI boom exploded, Palantir became one of the hottest companies around!

Palantir has been on FIRE lately! In its most recent earnings report (August 2026), revenue grew 93% compared to a year earlier, and its U.S. business grew an incredible 149%! Investors have LOVED the growth.

But here's a BIG warning that connects to valuation. Palantir's stock is VERY expensive compared to how much money it makes! Remember the P/E ratio? Palantir's is over 100, which is SUPER high (most companies are around 20 to 30). Investors are paying a LOT, betting Palantir keeps growing like crazy. If it keeps booming, great! But if growth slows even a little, the expensive stock could fall fast. Some people also worry about privacy, since Palantir handles so much sensitive data.
